Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are an American rock band. The current lineup consists of Ralph Darden (backing vocals and guitar), Adrienne Berry (backing vocals, keyboard, percussion, and saxophone), Marty Key (backing vocals and bass), Chris Wilson (drums), James Canty (backing vocals, keyboard, and guitar), and Ted Leo (piano, guitar, and vocals). In 1999, Ted Leo essentially launched the Pharmacists as a solo endeavor. He spent time with the Spinanes and the Sin-Eaters, and worked as a producer for the Secret Stars after his previous band, Chisel, disbanded in the late 1990s.
When the band signed with Lookout! Records in 2001, V.B. and Farina quit, resulting in more lineup changes. Leo and Canty worked with various studio-based support musicians to create The Tyranny of Distance album. The album mixed several genres: pop rock, acoustic folk balladry, and Celtic rock. Hearts of Oak, the band's second album, was released in 2003 and featured punk rock and new wave elements.
In the middle of Lookoutfinancial !'s woes, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists departed the label in 2006 and secured a new deal with Chicago's Touch and Go Records. The band's popularity grew through frequent traveling and appearances at significant events like the Coachella and Pitchfork. Living with the Living, their fourth full-band album was made available on March 20, 2007. The Mo' Living E.P. was also included in the first run of the album. For their tour in support of Living with the Living, former guitarist Canty joined them again.
