Tanya Tagaq CM (May 5, 1975) was born Tanya Tagaq Gillis in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada. She is also credited as Tagaq in her professional life. She is a Canadian Inuk throat singer who deals in folk and acappella genres. This popular singer and songwriter attended school in Cambridge Bay. Later on, Tagaq moved to Northwest Territories to attend Sir John Franklin High School. Next, she studied visual arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her plan to be a solo throat singer is pragmatic, as no one was interested in being her singing partner.
Tagaq began her official career as a popular performer at Canadian folk festivals. Some of the notable events include Folk on the Rocks in 2005. She was able to garner fame when Tagaq collaborated with Björk. It also includes concert tours and the 2004 album Medúlla. Since the album was released, Tagaq became widely known both in Canada and internationally. Tagaq also shared the stage with Shooglenifty and Kronos Quartet. She had been featured on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network as well.
Sinaa is the first album by Tagaq that came out in 2005. It was followed by the 2008 album Auk/Blood (??? and a live album titled Anuraaqtuq in 2011. Her first album was nominated for five Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards awards, hitting new success ranges. Her other notable discographies include Toothsayer EP 2019, Retribution 2016, and Animism 2014. Going Home Star (2015) is the hit collaboration by Tagaq.
