Tanika Charles Information
Canadian soul and rhythm and blues singer Tanika Charles made her first full-length album, Soul Run, available in 2016. Charles relocated to Toronto, Ontario, from Edmonton, Alberta, in the late aughts when she and her then-boyfriend split up. Before releasing her debut EP What! What? What!? in 2010, she sang backup for Bedouin Soundclash, Isis Salaam, and Emmanuel Jal and also performed as a solo artist using the moniker Ms. Chawlz.
She previewed her next album with the single "Soul Run" in the fall of 2015 and then released the album's second single, "Two Steps," in the spring of 2016. Both singles made it into the top 20 on CBC Radio 2's playlist. On May 10, the whole album was released, and she did her first extensive concert tour to promote it. The album was included in June's 2016 Polaris Music Prize longlist and the 2017 R&B/soul Recording of the Year Juno Award shortlist.
In addition to his frequent appearances on CBC Kids, Charles has also sung in a lounge on Global's drama series Bomb Girls. Many Canadian television shows have included her music, including Less Than Kind on HBO Canada, Rookie Blue on Global, Seed on Citytv, and Saving Hope on CTV. The Gumption, Charles's sophomore album, was released on Record Kicks in 2019.
