Sylvan Esso is an electronic pop duo comprising Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn. The group's self-titled debut album hit shelves on Partisan Records on May 12, 2014. The single "Hey Mami" was awarded Paste Magazine's No. 1 song of 2014, and the album peaked at 39 on the Billboard 200 and 7 on the Independent Albums chart. On July 9, 2014, they first appeared on national television, singing their hit "Coffee" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The band dropped the single "Sunburn" on streaming sites on May 19, 2022, with "Sylvan Esso IIII" included on the album cover art. In an interview with Stereogum, frontman Alex Sanborn referred to the first three Sylvan Esso albums as "a completed trilogy" and the June 23 release of the band's single "Your Reality" as "a glimpse of the band's new chapter.
The band released "Your Reality" on July 24, 2022, and announced that their fourth studio album, No Rules Sandy, would be released on August 12, 2022. Nick Sanborn's moniker and the band's creative mindset inspired the album's title. Pickups were recorded at their North Carolina studio, Betty's, and most of the album was recorded at a makeshift studio in a rented house in January 2022.
