Suzanne Vega Information
Suzanne Nadine Vega (July 11, 1959) is an American singer, record producer, musician, and songwriter. She was born in Santa Monica, California, and attended the High School of Performing Arts (now Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School). She studied modern dance at high school and graduated in 1977.
Vega is best known for her folk-inspired music. She had already started performing in small venues across Greenwich Village while attending Barnard College. Vega was a regular contributor to Monday night songwriters’ group of Jack Hardy at the Cornella Street Café. She had some of her first songs published on Fast Folk anthology albums. In 1985, she released her debut self-titled album, which was well-received by critics in the United States. The album became platinum in the United Kingdom and was produced by Steve Addaboo and Lenny Kaye.
Vega received breakthrough success after releasing her second studio album entitled “Solitude Standing” in 1987. Solitude Standing included the international hit single named “Luka,” written about an abused child, an uncommon subject for pop hits at that time.
Vega has released several other studio albums throughout her career, including Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers, Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles, Beauty & Crime, Songs in Red and Gray, Nine Objects of Desire, 99.9F, and Days of Open Hand.
