Sturgill Simpson broke through in 2014 with his album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. That record got much attention for mixing old-school country with new sounds and deep lyrics. One of the big songs from the album was “Turtles All the Way Down.” It showed off his rough, honest voice and a style that didn’t follow the usual country rules. Before he made it big, Simpson spent years working different jobs and playing music. He was in a band called Sunday Valley and later started recording solo. After Metamodern Sounds, he released A Sailor’s Guide to Earth in 2016. That album won a Grammy for Best Country Album and was nominated for Album of the Year. It had songs like “Brace for Impact” and a cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” Over time, Simpson kept changing up his sound. He made a rock record and a bluegrass album and even voiced a character in an animated Netflix series. He’s known for doing things his way and not sticking to one style.
In 2025, Simpson is back with a brand-new project. He’s returning to music under a new band name, Johnny Blue Skies, and releasing an album called Passage du Desir. It comes out in July and has eight tracks. He’s also going on tour across the U.S. this summer, playing new songs and old favorites. After a few quiet years, Simpson is back on stage, doing it all his way, just like always.
