Paul van Haver (March 12, 1985) is a Belgian producer, singer, rapper, and songwriter, professionally known by his stage name, Stromae. He was born in Etterbeek, Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. After dropping out of public school at 16, he enrolled at the Jesuit-run Sacré-coeur de Jette and the Collège Saint-Paul in Godinne. While still in high school, he and some of his pals started a rap group. The music of Jacques Brel, a Belgian singer-songwriter, as well as son Cubano and Rumba from the Congo, were early influences on him.
He first performed as the rapper Opmaestro in the year 2000, but he then switched to the name "Stromae," which is simply "Maestro" with the syllables reversed, like in the French slang practice of verlan. At 18, he joined forces with fellow Eichhof rap artist "J.E.D.I." to form the rap group Suspicion. The group created a song and music video titled "Faut que t'arrête le Rap..." before J.E.D.I. left the group. While Van Haver was attending private school, thanks to the assistance of his part-time job in the hospitality business, he was not doing up to par academically.
With launching his new clothing brand "Capsule 5" on April 6, 2018, Stromae also dropped his first single in over three years, titled "Défiler." They wrote the tune together with his sibling Luc Junior Tam. He contributed French-language vocals and co-produced Coldplay's "Arabesque" from the album Everyday Life, released in 2019.
