Regarding early polyphonic music written before the eighteenth century, no one knows more than the British vocal ensemble Stile Antico. Originating in the choral tradition of Oxford and Cambridge universities, Stile Antico is notable for tackling intricate polyphony without a director, unlike ensembles like the Tallis Scholars and The Sixteen. The singers' approach to rehearsal and performances as chamber musicians has won high appreciation. They have been performing since 2001 and have been called "one of the brightest new lights in the constellation of Renaissance vocal groups" after winning the Audience Prize at the 2005 Early Music Network Young Artists' Competition.
In 2020, they announced a new cooperation with Decca Classics for a "trilogy of new records," adding to their impressive discography of fifteen albums released for the Harmonia Mundi label. After being featured on NPR's All Things Considered, their debut recording, Music for Compline, became a commercial success, climbing to number two on the Billboard Classical chart and earning the group a reputation as "one of the finest choral ensembles of our day" from NPR's Tom Manoff.
The album was nominated for a 50th Grammy and won several industry accolades, including the 2007 Diapason d'or de l'année. Their album, Song of Songs, topped the Billboard Classical list for three consecutive weeks and won the 2009 Gramophone Award for Early music. Moreover, it was considered for a Grammy Award in the 52nd annual ceremony. As early as 2021, their recording The Golden Renaissance: Josquin des Prez was recognized with the first-ever Gramophone Award for Spatial Audio.
