Stephen Francis Von Till is an American educator, poet, and musician. In 1989, Von Till became a member of Neurosis; the band's alias, Tribes of Neurot, is an experimental/noise outfit. Music critics have called Von Till's work as a singer-songwriter a "haunting" mashup of folk songs, rural psychedelia, and expansive gothic Americana. His distinctively somber weathered voice and minimal acoustic guitar stylings take center stage amidst relatively spare arrangements in many of these tracks.
A peaceful, contemplative album is a synthesis of his various musical interests and inspirations, including home-recorded psychedelics, ambient music, folk, lo-fi, krautrock, fuzz guitars, analog delays, and vintage synthesizers. Von Till takes the idea of the recording studio as an instrument from dub music. He applies it to the mixing process, viewing it as a live performance in which he can deconstruct, manipulate, and reassemble the recordings to create something entirely new.
Von Till revealed his forthcoming poetry and songbook Harvestman on May 6, 2020. Von Till uses Warmoth components to create guitars in the Jazzcaster and Telecaster styles. A Lollar P90 (for the bridge) and a Bartolini Strat-style pickup (for the neck) are used.
