Steve Cropper Information
Steven Lee Cropper (October 21, 1941) is an American record producer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was born in Dora, Missouri. Cropper was exposed to black church music in Memphis. At 14, he acquired his first guitar via mail order. Cropper praised and admired a few guitarists such as Billy Butler (of the Bill Doggett band), Lowman Pauling (Five Royales, Chet Atkins, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry, and Tal Farlow. He, along with Charlie Freeman, formed the band called Royal Spades. The band eventually became the Mar-Keys.
Cropper has also been a founding member of the Stax house band Booker T. & the M. G.’s along with Al Jackson Jr. (drummer), Lewie Steinberg (bassist), and Booker T. Jones (Hammond organ). Cropper has worked with many notable musicians throughout his career, including John Lennon, Ringo Starr, The Jeff Beck Group, Jose Feliciano, John Prine, Rod Stewart, and Tower of Power. He moved to Los Angeles in 1975. He lived there for almost thirteen years, and in 1988, he reunited with the Blues Brother Band after moving back to Nashville.
Cropper was named “the greatest living guitar player” in 1996 by Britain’s magazine, Mojo. He has been featured in a few films as well, such as Be Kind Rewind (2008), Blues Brothers 2000 (1999), Satisfaction (1988), and The Blues Brothers (1980). Cropper has won Grammy Awards two times in 1968 and 1994 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, respectively.
