Stephanie Blythe (1970) is a mezzo-soprano from the United States. Blythe studied the flute while growing up in Mongaup Valley, New York. In 1987, she graduated from Monticello High School in New York. Her first exposure to live opera occurred while she was a student at Monticello when her high school music instructor took her class to the Metropolitan Opera for a matinée performance of La bohème. In 1991, she graduated with a degree in English Writing from SUNY Potsdam (SUNY Potsdam) and a degree in Music in 1992 from the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York at Potsdam.
On April 14, 1995, Blythe made her professional opera debut as the Voice from Above in Wagner's Parsifal at the Metropolitan Opera. Her career was revolutionized the next season when she was cast as Mistress Quickly in Falstaff at the Metropolitan Opera, filling in for Marilyn Horne and garnered wonderful reviews. Blythe debuted as Fricka and the Second Norn during the Seattle Opera's Ring Cycle. She has since returned to Seattle frequently, portraying such roles as Amneris, Dame Quickly, etc. She made her stage debut in The Sailor-Boy and the Falcon, an opera based on Isak Dinesen's "The Sailor-Tale," Boy's in November 2006.
