Stella Ruze Information
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Stella Ruze is a seven-piece root rock Americana ensemble. Rock tracks that defy categorization are combined with tight harmonies and high-octane live performances to create something fresh and original. A musical group that combines folk with roots rock Located in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood, Stella Ruze opened its doors in 2014. Brendan Johnson and Katie O'Donnell, the duo behind the band, were regulars at open mics and other low-key venues.
The ensemble was just a duo before adding Mason Wallack on keyboards and Alex Styer on trumpet. They started calling themselves "Stella Ruze" to honor Styer's New Orleans horn style, O'Donnell's vocal harmonies, and Wallack's melodic piano hooks while also embodying the underlying love lost/love regained motifs in Johnson's songs. The band's two professional albums both featured a lineup of four musicians.
Johnson contributed eight songs to the band's June 2016 LP, So Here, which were reworked to suit the Stella Ruze sound. Stella, who worked with famous sound engineer and drummer Matt Muir and under the artistic guidance of Philly music legend Ben Arnold, issued a five-song EP under their name in October 2017. On Friday, October 6, 2017, Stella Ruze and Josiah Johnson from The Head and the Heart headlined a sold-out EP release performance at Milkboy Philadelphia.
