Steel Betty is an American folk-grass band that originated from Austin, Texas. The band’s music is defined as blues, folks, Tex-Mex, Old-Time music, and classic country. They are a hip and virtuosic trio that consists of David McD (guitar, vocals), Micah Motenko (mandolin, piano, vocals), and Maddy Froncek (banjo, upright bass, vocals). All of them are polished multi-instrumentalists capturing Austin’s sounds and harmonies like no other group.
According to the frontman David McD, his dream was to play in a professional, straight tone singing, and hard-working American music ensemble. Thirty-three years later, his big dream was achieved when David wrangled Steel Betty together in 2016. Steel Betty is now successfully bringing foot-tapping joy to the fans scattered all across Texas.
Steel Betty’s performances are full of music by the Stanley Brothers, the Conjunto tradition, Bill Monroe, and much more. The trio is also well-known for often conducting workshops, aspiring musicians and students. Steel Betty has a beautiful and interactive program for schools that introduces young children to the tremendous variety and the depth of music from their home in the US.
