A notification window appears on the player's left side of the screen at the start of the festival day. They could be brought back to The Farm quite late at night if they visit festivals other than the Night Market.
Unless it is Night Market celebration day, the game will assume that the animals have been fed without your intervention. As a general rule, participation in festivals is not required.
Talking to the locals at the festivals is just like any other day in terms of gaining friendship points. If you celebrate a particular holiday, your friendship level may rise unexpectedly, such as with every person in your town or exchange for gifts.
All players in a multiplayer game must enter the festival proper (other than the Night Market) before continuing. The same holds for quitting if it doesn't cease when you do. The host is usually the only one to set things in motion.
