Sphinx Virtuosi Information
The Sphinx Virtuosi is a chamber orchestra dedicated to increasing racial and ethnic diversity in classical music. The Virtuosi comprises eighteen of the country's best Black and Latinx classical soloists who are mostly graduates of the globally renowned Sphinx Competition. They work together as cultural ambassadors, reaching out to new audiences.
During its critically praised debut at Carnegie Hall in December 2004, this unique quintet received effusive accolades from The New York Times: "The band delivered a more beautiful, precise, and meticulously sculpted sound than some completely professional orchestras that come through Carnegie Hall in the year," Allan Kozinn praised.
Since 2006, the Sphinx Virtuosi have performed at Carnegie Hall every year to sold-out audiences, earning exceptional praise from The New York Times. The Sphinx Virtuosi, who serves as a bridge between minority groups and the classical music establishment, continues to receive critical praise throughout their annual national tours to many of the country's most prestigious venues. The Sphinx Virtuosi seeks to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through performances of kaleidoscopically different material, as inspired by the Sphinx Organization's main objective.
