Southern Culture on the Skids, or SCOTS, is an American rock band that originated from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was founded in 1983. The group’s music is defined as neo-psychedelia, experimental rock, rockabilly, surf rock, alternative rock, and psychobilly. The current lineup of the ensemble consists of Rick Miller (vocals, guitar), Dave Hartman (percussion), and Mary Huff (vocals, bass). Some of the former members are Stan Lewis, Leslie Land, Chip Shelby, and Chris Bess.
Southern Culture on the Skids is known for touring everywhere, from the North Carolina prison system to Mount Fuji, Japan, for over 30 years. The band’s music is typically very upbeat. The band members write and perform songs about sex, dancing, and fried chicken. SCOTS’ live shows are well-known as band members often throw fried chicken and banana pudding into the audience, and the audience members are invited to dance on the stage.
Southern Culture On The Skids, a.k.a. First Album, was the first album by the band released in 1985. It was followed by many notable albums such as Too Much Pork For Just One Fork, For Lovers Only, Dirt Track Date, Plastic Seat Sweat, Liquored Up and Lacquered Down, The Kudzu Ranch, and The Electric Pinecones.
SCOTS also released many EPs, including Peckin’ Party, Girlfight, Santo Swings!/Viva del Santo, and Zombified. The group appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1995 and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Many of their songs have been featured in films and video games.
