South Florida Symphony Orchestra Information
The South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), formed in 1997 by Maestra Sebrina Mara Alfonso, has grown into a premier cultural institution serving Florida, from Palm Beach to Broward to Miami-Dade to Monroe County. The SFSO delivers vibrancy, creativity and promotes public commitment to the arts, guided by the notion that music is critical to community participation.
Recent achievements include being named a 'Major Cultural Institution' in Broward County, one of only a few organizations to get this accolade. The Symphony has been named a "Special Presentations Partner" by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, marking another milestone. Obtaining this status is a rare honor bestowed upon an institution. The Broward Center now co-produces concerts with the Symphony and uses its marketing partners for Symphony co-productions, a win-win situation.
The South Florida Symphony Orchestra has been a trailblazer in bringing symphonic music to impoverished communities. The Symphony in the Schools program, which began in 1997, encourages culturally underserved students and their families to participate in the arts. Since its start, the Symphony has impacted the lives of nearly 50,000 students.
The SFSO's collaborations are advancing classical music and reaching new listeners. Examples of the partnerships' vitality and talent include Martha Graham's Dance of Life, Hemingway Meets Mozart and Suidy Flamenco, and Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" in January 2019.
