The synthpop duo Soft Cell emerged from England in the early '80s. Marc Almond on vocals and David Ball on instruments make up the duet. The band became famous with their cover of "Tainted Love" in 1981, which went platinum, and the success of their debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.
Soft Cell scored a total of twelve top 40 successes in the UK, including "Tainted Love" (at #1), "Torch" (at #2), "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," and "What" (at #3 and #4, respectively), and "Bedsitter" (at no. 5). Between 1981 and 1984, they released four albums that debuted in the top 20.
The group went their own ways in 1984 but returned together in 2001 for a tour and a new record. On 30 September 2018, they reunited for a concert in London, announcing that it would be their last live performance in the UK as a pair while they might continue to perform and record together in other countries.
David Gray, Coil, and Nine Inch Nails are some artists who have covered songs by Soft Cell. Their song "Memorabilia" helped establish the band as forerunners of the synth-heavy techno genre. Together, they've amassed record sales of over ten million copies.
