Shinyribs Information
In 2007, Kevin Russell, formerly of the established Austin band The Gourds, started Shinyribs as a solo side project. The moniker "Shinyribs" originally referred to Russell when he performed solo, but later, Russell established a band named "Shinyribs" that included musicians like Gourds drummer Keith Langford.
As time went on, "Shinyribs" became the band's official moniker. Russell gave a homeless woman some ribs, and she yelled something that eventually became the moniker.
When Russell and Langford decided to take a break from the Gourds in 2013, Shinyribs quickly became their main project. In 2016, Shinyribs had a full band with bass guitar, keyboard, horns (Tijuana TrainWreck Horns), and a female vocal ensemble (Shiny Soul Sisters).
The music of Shinyribs draws from a wide variety of sources. Russell categorizes it as "country-soul" and "swamp-funk." Russell's ideas for the group's sound serve as the basis for the final say in musical matters for Shinyribs. Russell frequently breaks into dance during his live shows, either on stage or in a conga line that winds through the audience.
