SHIFT Information
Shift are more likely to perform a ballad than to knock over a microphone stand, although they were generally connected with the New York City hardcore culture of the mid-'90s. They gained a devoted following in the underground before leaping to a major label in 1997, thanks to their music's blend of intricate time shifts and frenzied breakdowns with overt pop tendencies.
Shift, comprised of Joshua Loucka (vocals/guitar), Brandon Simpson (bass), and Samantha Maloney (drums), originally hail from New York, took the DIY approach, putting out an EP called Pathos (1994) and a full-length album called Spacesuit (1995) on the independent label Equal Vision Records. Both albums demonstrated an excellent command of rock's harder and lighter aspects, with Loucka's monotone voice becoming tedious after a while. The mix was most effectively achieved on Spacesuit's "Dress Up," a song that effortlessly switches between ballads and rockers.
Despite the cutthroat nature of the industry, Shift managed to get signed to Columbia Records in 1997. In the fall of that year, the band released Get In and kept touring hard, with guitarist Mark Holcomb rounding out their sound (the multi-layer guitar work on their early albums was only partially fulfilled in concert).
