Serena Ryder Information
Serena Lauren Ryder (December 8, 1982) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She was born in Toronto and grew up in Millbrook, Ontario. She first gained prominence with her “Weak in the Knees” ballad that she released in 2007. Ryder grew up listening to the old records of Leonard Cohen and the Beatles from her parents’ collection. She sang at Royal Canadian Legion halls and motel hotels while she was just eight years old. She also started playing instruments at the age of thirteen after her stepfather brought her a guitar. Ryder had already started playing classic and folk tunes with her piano teacher at the age of fifteen.
Ryder left her home at the age of 17 for Peterborough, Ontario. She settled there into a community of artists. She went to the Integrated Arts Program at the Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational Institute. Ryder released her debut album in 1999 entitled, Falling Out through an independent record label, Mime Radio. She released her debut major-label album, Unlikely Emergency, through Redbird on April 5, 2005. The album went successful for her and earned her a performance at the 2004 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame press conference.
Other studio albums released by Ryder so far are If Your Memory Serves You Well (November 14, 2006), Is It O.K. (November 11, 2008), Harmony (November 27, 2012), Utopia (May 26, 2017), Christmas Kisses (October 19, 2018), The Art of Falling Apart (March 12, 2021). A few EPs of hers include Serena (1999) and Serena Ryder & the Beauties (2011).
