Scott Strickland may hurt the local economy if he set up shop with his guitar in a New York City subway transfer station or, for that matter, in the heart of Austin. His self-titled debut album explores love, loss, heartache, desire, self-doubt, ambition, and anxiety, and he discovers that his strength lies in his vulnerabilities.
Moving to Austin in 2013, Scott Strickland formed the "Scott Strickland Band" and released the EPs "Fly to the Sun: The Eastern Sun Sessions" (2015) and "Try This Love" (2016), both of which were met with favorable critical acclaim and inevitable comparisons to fellow musicians Seal and Dave Matthews. Strickland's aesthetic makes his music, especially when his quirks come through, so accessible that it's easy to miss the subtleties that bring to mind the work of artists like Ritchie Havens, Bill Withers, David Crosby, and Joni Mitchell (albeit with a thoroughly modern sound).
While the innately rhythmic guitar playing is still present on Strickland's upcoming self-titled LP, Strickland has delegated much of the record's heavy lifting to a superb rhythm section led by Mike Ingber (Drums) and Eric Harrison (Bass), who also produced the album. More introspective thought went into the song's lyrics.
