Sarah Kinsley (2001) is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Mountain View, California. Kinsley and her family moved to Singapore when she was in middle school, and she enrolled in an international school there. As an integral part of her songwriting process, Kinsley credits her classical training. As a teenager, she started exploring pop music, uploading Instagram renditions of songs by musicians like Justin Bieber and Julia Michaels. Kinsley, initially self-conscious about her singing ability, eventually gained confidence after seeing good reactions to her videos online.
The title track from Kinsley's extended play (EP) The King became viral on TikTok on June 4, 2021. NME critic Sophie Williams commended the EP, praising Kinsley's storyline and voice. Williams thought the EP was too short at only 20 minutes but agreed that Kinsley had "meticulously crafted" it. Later, Williams included The King on NME's list of top debut projects of 2021, while Kinsley was included in NME's list of top 100 upcoming artists for 2022.
Released in April of 2022, "Hills of Fire" is the first single from Kinsley's third extended play. In an interview with DIY magazine, she explained that she came up with the idea for the song after The King started selling well. To escape "the noise" of press interviews, the media, and public opinion, she and her family returned to California, where she was born.
