The Sandhill Stock Show Rodeo began in 1933 in Odessa, Texas. For more than 85 years, it has been attracting cowboys from all over the world. The rodeo is a big deal for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, which it is linked to.
There are just two such events in the whole nation, and this one boasts the sole all-Hereford show in all of Texas. Before the introduction of the rodeo in 1955, the event just consisted of a stock show. In 1992, the rodeo expanded its categories to include roping and match roping.
Constructed in 1954, the Sandhill Stock Show Rodeo is held at the 5,131-seat Ecter County Coliseum. Attendees of the Sandhill Stock Show Rodeo also have the opportunity to witness the coronation of a new queen. At the annual Miss, Teen, and Princess Rodeo Sandhills pageant, contestants don interview clothes and a modeling suit for the Miss and Teenage categories.
A Rodeo at Sandhills Multiple rodeo events are part of the rodeo. Events like bareback riding, bull riding and saddle bronc riding have gained international fame due to the acrobatic abilities of the horses used in these sports. The events of steer wrestling, tie-down, and steer roping are nearly as well-known. Another exciting sport is Barrel racing, in which riders compete in a cloverleaf pattern.
