San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus Information
The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (SFGMC) was the first openly gay Chorus in the world. It is also one of the biggest male choruses in the world and is often given credit for starting the LGBT vocal movement.
Jon Reed Sims, an early pioneer in the homosexual music movement, began the Chorus. Being homosexual, bisexual, or male is not a prerequisite for membership in the group. To be considered for SFGMC, one must meet the following criteria: be of legal singing age in one of the ranges: tenor, baritone, or bass, and complete an audition procedure set forth by the Artistic Director.
Thanks to its 300+ members, the SFGMC plays for a diverse spectrum of audiences and showcases a diverse repertoire of music.
Among SFGMC's numerous accolades are several Cable Car Awards bestowed upon the organization in the 1980s, official recognitions bestowed upon it by San Francisco and California elected officials, the Circles of Hope Award bestowed upon it in 2003 by the Metropolitan Community Foundation, and most recently, the Absolutely Fabulous Awards bestowed upon floats appearing in the San Francisco Pride Parade in 2011.
Nominated for "Best Music Organization" in the "Readers Poll - Classics" section in 2009, the Chorus was named "Best Of The Bay" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.
