The men's basketball team from San Diego, California, known as the San Diego Toreros, plays for the University of San Diego. The school's squad is presently a member of the WCC. 2008 the squad participated in the men's basketball NCAA Division I tournament. Steve Lavin is the head coach of the Toreros, and the Jenny Craig Pavilion is where they play their home games. 

They won their maiden championship when the West Coast Athletic Conference was in its heyday (1983–1984). One of USD's main competitors is San Diego State University. Despite holding a 10-9 series lead before then (SDSU leads 23-14 all-time with both schools at the Division I level), the Toreros have struggled to succeed against the Aztecs in the last 15 seasons, going 3-15. 

The Toreros last won a game in 2018–19 at San Diego State, and that was in the 2022–23 season. In the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal, Lamont Smith—who coached the team from 2015 to 2018—was implicated for allegedly receiving a bribe to fraudulently assist the children of a Beverly Hills real estate tycoon in gaining admission to the university.
