Samara Joy Information
Samara Joy (November 11, 1999) is an American jazz singer. She was born in the Bronx, New York. She participated in the jazz ensemble at Fordham High School for the Arts, where she studied. At that time, she had already earned the title of "Best Vocalist" at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington festival, a high school competition.
In the jazz department at SUNY's Purchase College, where she studied voice and was honored as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar, she was exposed to jazz for the first time. Friends there introduced her to Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Kenny Washington, Jon Faddis (whom she later studied with), and Ingrid Jensen, among other famous jazz singers and instrumentalists.
She won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition under her stage name Samara McLendon in 2019. While still a college student, she worked with producer and future manager Matt Pierson to create her self-titled debut recording, from which she will graduate with honors and a magna cum laude in 2021. Whirlwind Recordings issued Samara Joy on July 9, 2021. She was voted 2021's Best New Artist by Jazz Times. She was featured in the music video for Porgy and Bess' "Summertime" by Women of Color on Broadway, Inc. in February 2021.
