Salif Keita Information
Salif Keita (August 25, 1949) is a Malian singer and songwriter. He was born in Djoliba, Mali. Keita and his bandmates left Mali in the mid-1970s because of political upheaval. They eventually relocated to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where they frequently rented equipment due to financial difficulties. Over the next few years, the band's profile (now known as Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux) skyrocketed. After releasing Mandjou in 1978, they saw immediate popularity in West Africa.
Keita was appointed an Officer of Guinea's National Order of Merit by President Sékou Touré in 1976. Since their first meeting on an official visit in 1974, the President had been a huge fan of Keita and the band. Even after they left Mali, Touré continued to be a fan and supporter. Keita wanted to show his gratitude, so he wrote "Mandjou" (from his self-titled 1978 album) to sing Touré's praises.
Touré had already resorted to dictatorial leadership and thrown his country into bloodshed and disorder when the song was published. Keita continues to play "Mandjou" in different arrangements. In 1984, Keita relocated to Paris to pursue a solo career and a wider audience. His music fused West African folk music elements with those of Europe and the Americas.
