Saint-Saens Organ Symphony Information
Camille Saint-Saens completed Symphony Number 3 in C minor, Op. 78, in 1886, he was at the height of his artistic career. It is sometimes known as the Organ Symphony, although it is not a genuine symphony for organ but rather an orchestral symphony in which the pipe organ is used in two of the four sections. Symphonie Number 3 "avec orgue," was written on the score by the composer.
The Royal Philharmonic Society in England commissioned the symphony, and the composer conducted the first performance on May 19, 1886, at St James's Hall in London. Saint-Saens dedicated the composition to the memory of his friend Franz Liszt, who died on July 31, 1886. In January 1887, the composer also conducted the French premiere of the symphony.
The symphony was composed in two parts, even though it appears to follow the standard four-movement form and is divided into many recordings. Even though Saint-Saens planned to write a novel two-movement symphony, he wrote in his study of the work that it was cast in two parts.
The composer conducted the inaugural performance on May 19, 1886, at St James's Hall in London. The composer conducted the French premiere on January 9, 1887, at a Société des Concerts event. The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City hosted the United States premiere on February 19, 1887, conducted by Theodore Thomas.
