Ryley Walker Information
Ryler Walker (July 21, 1989) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was born in Rockford, Illinois. Walker and his detractors point to the band Genesis and Nick Drake as early inspirations. After relocating to Chicago in the early 2010s, Walker launched his career in the city's independent music scene. He initially gained attention by releasing many cassette EPs and a vinyl EP. First releasing an album in 2014 on the Tompkins Square label, he then followed that up in the first few months of 2015 with Primrose Green, distributed by Dead Oceans. Walker used several notable Chicago jazz and experimental artists, including Fred Lonberg-Holm, as Primrose Green's backing band.
Additionally, in 2015, Walker released Land of Plenty, an instrumental CD he had made with fellow Chicago musician Bill MacKay. It was captured live at Chicago's The Whistler club in January 2015, where the artist performed a residency. The album features recordings of songs performed on January 25 and 30, the final two nights of the residency. The left channel features MacKay's guitar, while the right features Walker's. There's a focal point in the middle where all of their instruments meet. Walker played 6- and 12-string guitars, while MacKay played 6-string guitar, requinto, and glass slide. Critics have categorized the album's music as fingerstyle ballads, psychedelic waltzes, and blues with raga influences.
