Russian National Orchestra Information
Mikhail Pletnev, the pianist and conductor, established the Russian National Orchestra in Moscow in 1990. It was the first Russian orchestra to perform at the Apostolic Palace in Rome and the Vatican and Israel. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, Pathétique, was the RNO's first recording for Virgin Classics, issued in 1991. RNO Founder and Artistic Director Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Jurowski, Paavo Järvi, Kent Nagano, Carlo Ponti, José Serebrier, and Vasily Petrenko have conducted the orchestra on over 80 recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, Pentatone, Ondine, Warner Classics, and other labels since then. Beethoven's entire symphonies and piano concertos on Deutsche Grammophon, Tchaikovsky's six symphonies on Pentatone, and the RNO Shostakovich project on Pentatone are among the notable releases.
The RNO tours annually throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas and is a regular performer at Edinburgh, the BBC Proms, Festival Napa Valley, and Festival of the Arts BOCA. The RNO created its annual festival in 2009, the RNO Grand Festival, in September to kick off the Moscow season. The tenth-anniversary celebration was organized from September 10 to October 4, 2018. Concerts by the RNO are frequently broadcast on NPR, the European Broadcasting Union, and Russia's Kultura channel. The Russian National Orchestra was voted one of the world's greatest orchestras by a jury of foreign critics established by Gramophone in 2008.
