Ronnie Milsap Information
Ronnie Lee Milsap is from Robbinsville, North Carolina, and a well-known American country music pianist and singer. At birth, he had a congenital disorder that left him nearly blind. He was raised in poverty by his grandparents in the Smoky Mountains after being abandoned by his mother. Milsap was sent to the Governor Morehead School For the Blind in Raleigh, North Carolina when he was five. At the age of 7, his instructors noticed his musical talents, and he began studying classical music formally at Governor Morehead, where Milsap mastered the piano. It's reported that he lost the vision he had left in his left eye when one of the school's houseparents slapped him.
Apparitions were the first rock band by Milsap after he became interested in rock and roll music. He has often paid tribute to the musicians of the 1950s who inspired him, such as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley. Milsap earned a full college scholarship and briefly attended Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. During the same time, he joined a popular local R&B band called the Dimensions.
In 1965, Milsap scored his first hit, which was a single, "Never Had It So Good" by Ashford & Simpson. The song peaked at number 19 on the R&B chart. Some of his other hit singles are "A Rose by Any Other Name (Is Still a Rose)," "That Girl Who Waits on Tables," "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends," and "What Goes On When the Sun Goes Down."
Milsap has earned many awards and honors throughout his career, such as 4 Academy of Country Music Awards, 2 Billboard, many Country Music Association awards, and Grammy awards.
