Archie Fairhurst, better known by his stage name Romare, has a method of creating based on collage, in which he creates vibrant new forms out of old material. His albums and performances dating back to 2012 unfold as a patchwork of inspirations and obsessive lines of study, made up of a global panoply of the source material. His music is playful and immediate, but it is also the product of extensive research and is fascinating.
The answer can be found in the artist's moniker: Fairhurst chose to go by the name Romare to pay homage to Romare Bearden, an esteemed American multi-disciplinary artist most well-known for his insightful collages. Fairhurst saw a way to approach the infinite pool of electronic music production in Bearden's process. He channeled his vast music knowledge into creating music from existing sonic material and bedding themes into his juxtapositions for a more considered approach to sampling. This allowed him to sample music more thoughtfully.
