Roger McGuinn (July 13, 1942) is best known as the founder and leader of the extremely influential 1960s band The Byrds. Their psychedelic and folk-rock sound revolutionized the field and cleared the path for the next generations of rock & roll to grow. Formed in L.A. in 1964, the Byrds had a quite brief but very popular and powerful career.
When the band first started, its songs "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" were top hits. Over their 10 studio albums, the band produced several hits. Over the years, they changed their line-up several times; most famously, David Crosby went on to establish a great career of his own. The Byrds broke up formally in 1973. Throughout his career, McGuinn was the only one.
McGuinn has had a tremendous solo career, including over ten solo albums, collaborations, and other projects since The Byrds. By creating the "jingle-jangle" sound, he is regarded as a guitar icon and innovator. Using the banjo-style fingerpicking and unusual noises created by the amps, they produce a particular sound and style. He most famously worked with Bob Dylan on the "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" recording.
