Robert Klein (February 8, 1942) is an American stand-up actor, comedian, and singer. He was born in The Bronx, New York. After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School, Klein intended to study medicine but changed his mind while attending Alfred University. Klein learned about an open audition for The Second City as a Yale Drama School student.
As the host of the Comedy Tonight series in 1970, Klein made his first significant public appearance and debuted many of the routines that would later appear on his albums. He achieved widespread fame in the 1970s thanks to his lengthy performances centered on the Watergate crisis. He appeared as Paul Sand in an episode of Friends and Lovers in 1974.
In 1975, during HBO's early broadcast days, Klein participated in the network's inaugural stand-up comedy special. Since then, he has starred in multiple additional one-person shows, often ending with his "I can't stop my leg" performance. Klein hosted Season 1 Episode 15 on November 15, 1975, and Season 3 Episode 28 on January 28, 1978. Tough Director (1975), Nick the Lounge Singer Sings the Star Wars Theme (1978), and The Olympia Restaurant: Cheeseburger, Chips, and Pepsi (1978) were all sketches he wrote and performed.
