Rob Aldridge & the Proponents, a rock band from Alabama, have taken a two-pronged approach to their upcoming second album, Mind Over Manners, aiming to convey meaningful truths and back them up with tasteful beats. They avoided the sophomore slump by a wide margin, releasing a solid enough twelve-song compilation to compete with other Alabama bands of the same era, such as Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Alabama Shakes. Studio 144 was a smokey loft studio in Green Hill, Alabama, where the Proponents recorded Mind Over Manners. Aldridge and Jay Burgess of the Shoals psych-rock/power-pop band The Pollies contributed to the album's production.
In addition to Burgess' bandmate Clint Chandler on keyboards and cellist Caleb Elliott and violinist Kimi Samson on strings, the current Proponents lineup of Rob Malone (Drive-By Truckers) on guitar, Nick Recio (Great Peacock) on drums, and the late Stone Anderson on bass all contributed to "Mind Over Manners." Lyrics for "Devil on Sunday" and "Poor Taste" were written by Grammy winner Gary Nichols (previously of The Steeldrivers) and Freddie Hewitt, respectively.
