Roanoke Symphony Orchestra Information
Gibson Morrissey and a group of other music aficionados founded the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, popularly known as the "RSO," in 1953. Gibson Morrissey was the conductor until 1975, when he died. Professional musicians are selected for the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra through a competitive audition.
The Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra (RYSO), the String Ensemble, and the Flute Ensemble are the three ensembles that make up the Roanoke Youth Symphony. The RSO and the Roanoke City Schools shared the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award in 2015. It has put on a variety of programs for local students.
The Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra (RYSO) was founded in 1956 and provided Western Virginia's sole professional orchestra training opportunity. This is a student orchestra with around 80 members ranging in age from 12 to 18. Since 1988, James Glazebrook has served as the director. Members are chosen through annual auditions and may play with the RYSO until they graduate from high school.
The String Ensemble, founded in 1985, comprises roughly 50 string players ranging in age from 8 to 15. They rehearse once a week under Ms. Michelle Smith Johnson's direction and teaching.
Julee Hickcox, Principal Piccolo of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, directs and instructs the Flute Ensemble founded in 2008.
