Riton Information
Henry Smithson (September 13, 1978) is an English electronic music DJ and producer. He is professionally known by his stage name, Riton. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. Smithson's first two 12" singles were issued on the label he founded, Switch Recordings when he graduated from college. He first spun records at the "Shindig" club in Newcastle. There, he was spotted by record producer Mark Rae, who signed him to Grand Central Records. After learning the ropes from Rae, he joined Manchester's Fat City Records staff.
Before releasing his largely instrumental debut album Beats du Jour (2001), he had a song called "Communicated" included on the Grand Central compilation album Central Heating 2 (2000. Homies And Homos (2004), Riton's second album, included many more vocals and guests, including Lee Jones of Howdi and Luca Santucci. It features a cover of "Killing an Arab" by The Cure.
Together with Ben Rymer, Riton established the Gucci Sound System in 2005. Both duo members have their nightclub in East London called Druzzi's Baltimore Rave Club at Nightmoves on Shoreditch High Street. Headman, Erol Alkan, 2 Many DJs, The Rapture, Richard X, Mylo, and FC Kahuna, are just a few of the guests who have performed. Several European labels, including the UK's Linxfarren, have published 12" singles by Riton since the closure of Grand Central Records in 2006.
