Richie Hawtin Information
Richie Hawtin (June 4, 1970) is a British-Canadian DJ and electronic musician born in Banbury, Oxfordshire. He was reared in LaSalle, Ontario, a suburb of Windsor, Ontario, before moving to Detroit, Michigan, when he was nine. His father was a robotics technician at GM and an avid listener to electronic bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, both of which he introduced his son to at a young age.
At 17, he started working as a DJ at bars and nightclubs. His early style was a fusion of house music and techno, and he learned it from Scott "Go-Go" Gordon at The Shelter in Detroit. In 1989, he created the label Plus 8 with Canadian DJ John Acquaviva to release his tracks under the name F.U.S.E. He left his film studies at the University of Windsor and helped launch the careers of artists like Speedy J and Kenny Larkin with his label, Plus 8.
Along with Robert Hood and other producers, he released a series of monthly 12-inch singles in 1996 titled Concept 1 that delved into minimal techno. His M-nus label also pursued this trend. The first in a three-part mix album series, 1999's Decks, EFX & 909, featured 38 tracks shaped by effects and drum machines.
