Richie Furay Information
Richie Furay (May 9, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Before forming Buffalo Springfield, Furay, and Stills played together in the house band at New York City's legendary Cafe Au Go Go as members of the nine-piece group the Au Go Go Singers (Furay, Roy Michaels, Rick Geiger, Jean Gurney, Michael Scott, Kathy King, Nels Gustafson, Bob Harmelink, and Stills). Together with Jim Messina (record producer and occasional bass player for Buffalo Springfield) and Rusty Young, he created the country rock band Poco in the late '60s.
In 1974, after being dissatisfied with Poco, Furay formed his band, the Southern Hillman Furay Band. At this time, Furay was converted to Christianity by the band's pedal steel guitarist, Al Perkins. When he came to trust in God, it helped him mend his broken marriage. Even though Souther Hillman Furay Band's self-titled first album was certified Gold and had the top thirty hit with "Fallin' in Love" in 1974, the band was ultimately doomed by weak record sales and failed attempts at repeating its earlier success.
Furay created The Richie Furay Band with Jay Truax, John Mehler, and Tom Stipe after relocating from Los Angeles to Sugarloaf Mountain near Boulder, Colorado. The group's 1976 album, I've Got a Reason, highlighted Furay's newfound beliefs. Furay partnered with David Geffen and Asylum Records to promote the album's release. Furay told Geffen that, while his upcoming album will be affected by his newfound Christianity, it would not be an attempt to preach Furay's newfound faith. Yet, I've Got a Reason launched Furay into the Christian rock spotlight.
