Rhiannon Giddens Information
Rhiannon Giddens (February 21, 1977) is an American singer born in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her distinctive folk music has earned her a lot of attention. In addition to playing the banjo and the violin, she was the main vocalist for the band Carolina Chocolate Drops, which sang old-time, country, and blues music. Giddens has published five solo albums throughout her career, including her work with the band Chocolate Drops, which was awarded a Grammy Award.
She was among the numerous musicians who contributed to the 2014 T Bone Burnett-produced album The New Basement Tapes, which included original compositions set to some Bob Dylan songs whose lyrics had recently been found. The resultant album reached number forty on the Billboard album chart with Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes.
While regular host Cerys Matthews was on vacation in 2020, Giddens filled in for her on August 17, hosting the BBC Radio 2 Blues Show. Giddens's enduring influence on the UNCG community and her musical career led to her being awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Upon obtaining the degree in December 2020, she sang Alice Gerrard's "Calling Me Home" during a virtual commencement ceremony. Wondrium welcomed Giddens in 2023 as the host of "The Banjo: Music, History and Heritage." The 2023 Ojai Music Festival was named to Giddens's musical directorship in 2022.
