Requiem and Song Information
In 1976, Kenneth MacMillan set Gabriel Faure's Requiem to ballet for a one-act performance. As the artistic director of the Stuttgart Ballet, MacMillan's good friend John Cranko was the recipient of the ballet's dedication. At the close of 1976, it made its debut in Stuttgart. MacMillan later staged a new version of the ballet for London's Royal Ballet in 1983.
Various works by William Blake, such as Dante's Inferno, Paradise Lost by John Milton, and Job by the Bible, inspired the choreography. Mourners enter the scene, carrying a young woman aloft like an offering. Following the Offertorium and Sanctus, she dances to the Agnus Dei, where she consoles a troubled woman. All the dancers face away from the audience for the last section, titled "In Paradisum," and exit the stage as it floods with light.
MacMillan's Requiem was a huge success, and the mix of singing, dance, and instrumental music won over listeners' hearts. Even though the music was originally intended for religious purposes, ballet is profoundly spiritual rather than dogmatic.
