RCMP Musical Ride Information
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have a specific squad called the Musical Ride that features 32 mounted officers showing off their equestrian prowess. Promotional activities for the RCMP are held both in Canada and abroad. Regina, District of Assiniboia, was the site of the first official ride in 1887 under the direction of Inspector William George Matthews.
There were two cavalry units in the 1920s and 1930s, one based in Regina and the other in Ottawa. Due to the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Musical Ride halted its operations until 1948.
In 1966, the RCMP stopped requiring its recruits to learn to ride horses as part of their job responsibilities. In 1968, the group established itself as its entity and relocated to Pakenham, Ontario. The original members of the RCMP and the Musical Ride were all men. In 1981, the Ride welcomed its first female participant.
The Musical Ride makes 40-50 stops on its annual tour of Canada and other countries, often between May and October. Expo 67, the Olympic Games in Montreal, the 88 Winter Olympics in Calgary, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are just a few of the domestic venues where it has been featured.
