Ranky Tanky Information
Ranky Tanky is an American ensemble that is based in Charleston, South Carolina. The current lineup of the ensemble consists of Quentin E. Baxter (drums), Kevin Hamilton (bass), Quiana Parter (vocals), Clay Ross (guitar and vocals), and Charlton Singleton. Ranky Tanky specializes in jazz-influenced arrangements of traditional Gullah music. The band’s name “Ranky Tanky” came from a Gullah expression that is roughly translated as “get funky.”
Ranky Tanky released its debut album in October 2017 entitled “Ranky Tanky.” The album was listed number 1 on the Billboard jazz charts by February. In January 2020, Ranky Tanky was nominated and won the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album.
Ranky Tanky’s overall goal is to create a Gullah music vocabulary with a contemporary interpretation that is to be shared with the world. The band uses Gullah melodies and lyrics that range from children’s rhymes and dance music to traditional spirituals.
Ross is the founding member of Ranky Tanky. Still, before forming the band, he was active in the band Matuto, which was a world music group, combining modern jazz elements with Brazillian Forro music. The other members were also playing in various bands or places, and they gradually gathered as the Ranky Tanky members. The group signed a record deal with Resilience Music Alliance and released its debut album on the label. The group has also released a few other notable studio albums such as Good Time (2019), Beat Em Down (2019), and Stand by Me (2019).
