Rachael Kilgour Information
Rachael Kilgour is a composer and performer from Minnesota whose honest, lyric-driven music has been praised for its bravery and humanity. Kilgour has performed at Lincoln Center in New York City, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. He was the grand prize winner of the prestigious international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition in 2015 and the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest.
Kilgour married in her early twenties and spent her early adulthood raising her stepchild and establishing a family and community. Her writing at the time (Self-Titled 2008, Will You Marry Me? 2011, Whistleblower's Manifesto 2013) documented her life as a young parent in a same-sex relationship. It highlighted sociopolitical themes ranging from government corruption to wealth disparity and religious hypocrisy. Kilgour's singing career took a back seat during those years as she focused on her family.
Kilgour sought peace in songwriting in the aftermath of a divorce. Rabbit in the Road (2017), her third full-length album, was inspired by that period.
Kilgour followed up with her second EP, Game Changer, in February 2019. The aptly titled piece looks at the artist's tentative initial steps towards a new life after a heartbreak. Kilgour examines the complexities of romance and relationships, mounts a magnificent defense of queer love, and reconsiders her values as a citizen of a changing world with a clear head.
Kilgour received a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant in 2020 to embark on a songwriting project about her father's life and death.
