Rachael and Vilray Information
Rachael & Vilray is an intimate duo that combines the talents of Brooklyn guitarist/vocalist Vilray Blair Bolles and Lake Street Dive singer Rachael Price. They perform a selection of jazz and traditional pop standards from the 1930s and 1940s. They have been performing live since 2015, but Rachael & Vilray's 2019 debut brought them more recognition.
Vilray & Rachael, a Jazz-trained singer with a deep voice, Price is best known as the main singer of the experimental pop band Lake Street Dive. She was born in Australia in 1985 and raised in Tennessee as the daughter of conductor and composer Tom Price. She started playing jazz after being inspired by Ella Fitzgerald. She studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She received praise for her performances at the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival's International Jazz Vocal Competition and the 2004 Thelonious Monk Institute Vocal Competition, where she placed in the semifinals. She made her first buddy, fellow student Bolles, at NEC.
Bolles struck Price with his songwriting abilities while working on many projects with her future Lake Street Dive bandmates Mike Calabrese and Mike "McDuck" Olson. Bolles is a talented guitarist and singer. Despite their common creative interests, Price and Bolles were still unaware of their mutual appreciation of traditional pre- and post-war jazz. After graduating from college, Price found success with Lake Street Dive, while Bolles shifted his concentration away from performing to other things.
