Purple Reign is a tribute show that features the music of Prince. The tribute show has been performed mainly at casinos in the Las Vegas area where the star and producer of the show are Jason Tenner. Purple Reign originated out of The Mothership Connection, which is a tribute band from the 1970s. Tenner played in the band in the mid-1990s. He was inspired to initiate the incorporation of Prince's music into the band's act. This idea came when he dressed as the musician for Halloween in 1996 and received positive feedback on the perfect resemblance to the Prince.
In 1997, Tenner, along with other members of The Mothership Connection, formed Purple Reign as a band. The band was named after the 1984 hit song, "Purple Rain," by Prince and the film of the same name. Purple Reign regularly performed at Tom and Jerry's, which is a bar near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. The band was hired to perform nightly in the lounge at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in 2001. For the next few years, the tribute band played weekly gigs at various casinos, including Mandalay Bay, Santa Fe Station, and the Monte Carlo.
Purple Reign also made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman (2008). The band made its transition to being a ticketed show and not a band playing in open casino lounges in 2009. The tribute group was signed as a weekend headliner act at the Hooters Casino Hotel. The show gained massive attention after the Prince's death in April 2016.
