Puccini's Tosca Information
Tosca is a three-act opera written by Giacomo Puccini and based on a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The Teatro Costanzi in Rome hosted the premiere on January 14, 1900. The work is a melodramatic composition set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples' sovereignty of Rome threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. It is based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language theatrical play, La Tosca. It features torture, murder, and suicide scenes and some of Puccini's most famous lyrical arias.
Puccini first saw Sardou's play while it was touring Italy in 1889, and after considerable deliberation, he acquired the rights to adapt it into an opera in 1895. For four years, the composer fought with his librettists and publisher to transform the wordy French drama into a compact Italian opera. Tosca premiered in Rome during a period of turbulence, and the first performance was postponed for a day to avoid trouble. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the opera was a huge hit with the general population.
Tosca is a through-composed opera, with arias, recitatives, choruses, and other musical parts woven together in a seamless whole. Tosca's dramatic power and characters continue to captivate both singers and viewers, and the opera is one of the most often performed.
