Lee County, Florida native Konrad Wert, better known as Possessed by Paul James since 2005, is a singer-songwriter and musician in the American folk tradition. His music, which features banjo, guitar, and violin, originates in folk, blues, and punk—he was raised in a close-knit Mennonite community with other pacifists, helpers, and outsiders. He and his family (wife and two sons) currently reside in Texas, where they are keeping up with the demand for his music via touring, online sales, etc.
In addition, he is a teacher of students with special needs in Kerrville, Texas. The Folk Singer, a 2008 film by Slowboat Films, features Paul James when possessed. Together with Milk Products Media, Wert started a year-long documentary in 2015 to raise public awareness about the importance of Special Education and the need for state and federal reform. Production for When It Breaks wrapped up in 2018 and the film will be released soon.
'There Will Be Nights When I'm Lonely' was released by Hillgrass Bluebilly Records at the close of 2013. The album debuted at No. 12 on Billboard's Country/Bluegrass album list. Articles and music from the album were featured on NPR, CMT, and MTV. According to the New York Times, "PPJ, a one-man folk wonder," was one of Oregon's best shows at the 2014 Pickathon Music Festival.
