Pictures at an Exhibition Information
Pictures at an Exhibition is a piano suite composed by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. It consists of eleven movements and a Promenade theme that is repeated and varies throughout the suite. The opera follows a guided tour of an exhibition of architect and painter Viktor Hartmann's works held at Saint Petersburg's Imperial Academy of Arts after his untimely death the year before. Some specific works upon which each suite movement is based have since disappeared.
Artist, architect, and designer Viktor Hartmann's photographs served as the basis for the composition. Not shortly after Hartmann returned to Russia from abroad, Mussorgsky likely first encountered him in 1868. They became fast friends because they were both committed to advancing a uniquely Russian art form.
Composers and musicians of the time contributed to the composition's fame by arranging and recording it in various orchestrations; the most popular is Maurice Ravel's 1922 orchestral version, which has become a showcase for virtuoso pianists. The last movement, "The Bogatyr Gates," in particular, is thought by many to be Mussorgsky's finest composition.
In particular, Stasov lauded Mussorgsky for the "Scene by the Fountain" from Boris Godunov, noting that Hartmann adored Mussorgsky's music. Although Mussorgsky had previously neglected the scene in his 1869 version, he revised it for Act 3 in his 1872 rewrite in response to the demands of Stasov and Hartmann.
